As the medieval town hall proudly stands in the center, dozens of golden-yellow cheeses roll into place for an age-old tradition: the world-famous Gouda cheese market. The history of the Gouda cheese market dates back to 1198 when Gouda was granted the ‘staple right’ for cheese, meaning all cheese from the region had to be traded there. The cheese market kicks off at 10:00 AM with the ringing of a bell, signaling the start of the spectacle. Farmers and traders, dressed in traditional attire, still negotiate in the same way as centuries ago—using the famous ‘handjeklap’ (hand clap bargaining). With each clap, they call out a price until they finally shake hands to seal the deal. The lively atmosphere, the cheers and laughter of the crowd, and the enthusiastic price calls make the traditional cheese market an unforgettable experience.

The cheese girls, dressed in cheerful blue dresses and white bonnets, welcome visitors with a bright smile. This weighing scale, dating back to 1668, was used for centuries to officially weigh cheeses before they were sold. On market days, this ritual comes back to life, complete with cheese carriers skillfully loading the heavy cheeses from carts onto the scales.
